I have spent years watching women try to figure out who they are.

 

Some of them take personality tests and get results that feel partly right and partly like a description of someone else. Some of them know their gifts theologically but cannot connect those gifts to the Monday-through-Friday life they are actually living. Some of them have had such hard Walks -- such difficult, winding, costly roads to get where they are -- that they can barely see the gifts underneath the wounds.

 

And almost all of them are trying to do this work in a world that either tells them personality is everything -- that how they are wired is who they are, full stop -- or that personality does not matter at all because they are new creations and the old things have passed away.

 

I believe both of those are wrong. And I believe Scripture shows us a better way.

 

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, she is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." -- 2 Corinthians 5:17You are a new creation. That is not in question. But you are a new creation with a particular wiring, a particular story, and a particular way of moving through the world that God put in you before the world got to you. And the Wonder -- the Spirit of the living God in you -- is not trying to undo that wiring. He is trying to sanctify it. To take what He put there and run His glory through it until it produces something that looks more like Jesus than like any personality type.
